History

Relationships

Junior (nephew) - He has an excellent relationship with his nephew, to the point that Junior is upset when he has to leave the Eco Village to go back to the city with his mom. It is implied that Junior regularly visits Tong during the holidays. Junior regularly runs errands with Tong, helps Tong and the other fishermen fish, and knows how to fillet a fish. He also helps Tong during the Architecture camp. Even when Junior is so upset about leaving the village that he doesn't talk to Tong, he continues to help him and the other fishermen out. When Junior finally agrees to leave with his mother, Tong gives him his scarf and goes for a high-five with Junior before faking him out.

Pat and Pran - Tong has something of a mentor-like relationship with Pat and Pran, having fostered a supportive and enjoyable environment during the Architecture camp. Pran initially had joined him and Junior in his car for errands, and Pat crashes, asking if they have room for one more. Tong asks Pat to run some errands for him at the market, which Pat agrees to. On the drive back when Tong's car gets stuck in mud, Pat and Pran push the car out together, causing Pran to fall in mud. After Pat and Pran wash off in the ocean, Tong takes them back to his house to change into clean clothes.

Pat is assigned to stay in one of the rooms in Tong's house on one night during the Architecture camp.

When running away from their school and family life, Pat and Pran return to the Eco Village and ask Tong for boarding assistance. Tong accepts, saying that he will let them stay at his house and even provide them with free drinks as long as they help him and the other fishermen with fishing in the morning. Though not enthusiastic, they accept and soon adapt into Tong's routine. Tong advises Pat later about Uncle Yod's bar, has them help cook meals, and tips Yod off about Pran's guitar playing. As Pat and Pran suggest staying at the Eco Village instead of going back, he is supportive of them; when they change their minds, he teases them about being disappointed. He listens to Pran play Our Song for Pat at Uncle Yod's bar.

Tong gives Pat and Pran life advice quite frequently, for the little screentime he has on the show. It is clear that they mutually respect and like each other, especially as Pat and Pran return to the village after graduating university to take pictures with Tong and Junior.

Quotes

"You asked why I didn't quit what I'm doing. What I do might not be able to change the whole world. But it surely changes my attitude towards this world. You might think one man can't change the world. But I want you to know that this world can't change someone like me either."
