Just Friend?

แค่เพื่อนมั้ง, or Just Friend? is the official name of a song featured in Bad Buddy. It is sung and performed by Nanon Korapat as Pran in the show.

The song is used as an ending theme for Episodes 1-5.

During the OhmNanon FanMeet Friend City in 2022, Ohm and Nanon performed a rock remix of the song when re-performing their guitar-drum-off scene from Episode 1.

Canon Name

Though the official release of the song is called "แค่เพื่อนมั้ง Just Friend?", within the universe of Bad Buddy, Pran titles and refers to the song as "หวั่นๆ Insecure."

Nanon also wrote his own version prior to the version that did not make it in the show, with a similar title, "ปล. หวั่นๆ P.S. I'm Insecure." This suggests that "Insecure/P.S. I'm Insecure" may have been intended to be its original title.

Background

In Bad Buddy, when Pat and Pran are in high school, they join the music club together and as a club are tasked to perform for their high school during Christmas in their second year (Matthayom 4).

One afternoon, Pat and Pran are in their school courtyard, brainstorming what song to write. Pat suggests Never by 25 Hours, but Pran wants to play a song that gives the idea of "born to be together" and about "see[ing] each other every day, and suddenly their feelings have changed." Pat chimes in to say that the changed feelings causes them to become rivals, and points out that Pran was monologuing about the situation between their households.

Pran responds with confusion.

He then asks Pat if he has ever had a "secret crush" on someone before, as Pat has evidently always dated the people he liked. Pat mentions that sometimes he is insecure and hesitant to approach. Pran likes his usage of the word "insecure" and writes it down; Pat demands half the credit on the song and writes his name (romanized to "Phat") large enough to cover the whole notebook page, along with a heart.

"I like it. It's like you're not sure if it will turn out good or bad. You're afraid to feel more. You're hesitating. You want to jump in but you're afraid to be heartbroken. You want to step back but also want to seize the chance. The feeling of hesitation. I don't know. I just like it." - Pran, in a flashback in Episode 5

Pat refers to the song as "our [Pat and Pran's] song" and Pran scolds him for taking up the whole page, not just half of it.

When Pran and Pat play it along with their music club, the performance gets cut short into the beginning of the first chorus. Pran abruptly stops playing when he notices his mom and dad in the crowd and steps off the stage. He also leaves his guitar behind in the school, and Pat does not see him for three years after this incident, due to Pran getting transferred to boarding school.

It is implied that Pran also did not write or perform music during this time period. When at the bar after a rugby practice with Wai, Wai tells him he should play something on the guitar since he knows that Pran can play, but has not played for a while. Pran plays the beginning chords of "Just Friend?", but stops when he notices Pat and Ink come into the bar.

Pran and his friends from the Architecture faculty play the song in full nearly three years later after the Christmas incident, during Pat and Pran's Freshy (freshmen) Day band competition. It is implied that Pat realizes that Pran had written the song about him during this performance.

Pat is jealous that Pran played the song for the competition, telling Pran later in the episode that it is their song. Pran says that because he wrote it, it is his song, and that Pat does not have ownership of it in his eyes.

The song comes up in Episode 12 after Pat sneaks into Pran's room. Pran asks Pat what song he wants to hear, but elects to have Pat guess instead. He begins playing "Just Friend?" and the begin to sing together, but Pran gets the lyrics wrong, singing the "insecure" line early.

In the post-credit sequence of Episode 12, Pran incorrectly refers to the song as "แค่เพื่อนมั้ง." This may have been a slip-up on Nanon's part.

Music Video

On October 22, 2021, GMMTV released an official music video for the song. Though the music video does not take place in Bad Buddy canon, both Ohm and Nanon are in it, and the music video has a BL romance with Nanon's character visibly pining, similar to Bad Buddy.

In the music video, Ohm and Nanon are hotel workers who encounter each other in an elevator that breaks down. A montage of their other encounters is featured, hinting at a long time unresolved tension. However, when Nanon's character tries to confess to Ohm's, it is revealed that Ohm's character had AirPods in and did not hear his confession. It is implied that he may still have his own feelings for Nanon's characters, though.
