Pat and Pa's unnamed mother, as well as Ming's wife.

She is named in the novel.

History

It is implied that she knows about Ming and Dissaya's history.

She first appears in the flashback montage during her and Dissaya's prenatal rivalry when they are giving offerings and making wishes to the monks. She wishes for a handsome son with a "prettier girlfriend, someone nice and lacking in jealousy." The latter is an addendum after she hears Dissaya wish for her son to have a pretty girlfriend first. Later, after giving birth, she and Dissaya argue over being called "Ma" or "Mae" when speaking to their babies.

She likely discovered when Pa nearly drowned.

In Episode 1, she eats dinner with her family, and reacts with alarm with Pat mentions running into Pran at university. She scolds Pa for calling Pran "hot," asking Pa if she even knows him. When Ming brags about chasing away men from the Faculty of Architecture when he was a student at South Tech, she teases him for how proud of himself he is.

In Pa's first year of university and Pat's second, she FaceTimes her children. She mostly speaks to Pa, who shows her how their dorm is divided. She then tells Pat that Ming, who is beside her, wants to speak to him, before handing the phone off to her husband.

When Pat gets shot, she and her family arrive to the hospital to bring him home. To her surprise, coming out of Pat's hospital room is Pran, who scurries away. Pat tells them that Pran had been helping him clear his name because Pran's friend had CCTV footage to provide as evidence. She scolds Ming, saying, "See? The things you put in his head. It's partially your fault." After Ming sits down, she asks Pat, "How are you, my badass son?" and checks up on him.

On the car ride home, Pat asks Ming to drop him off outside of their house to speak to Pran. In the car with Pa and her husband, she encourages Ming to thank Pran for helping out Pat, saying, "We are the adults." He follows her advice and does so.

She encounters Pat and Pran when they are grocery shopping later in the episode, and witnesses Ming confront them and push Pran to the ground. She pulls Ming back and tells him to stop, and that they can talk at home. When Pat says directly that he and Pran are dating, she is the first to react. Once Pat implies that he knows the history between Ming and Dissaya, she drags Ming home and tells Pat to come along as well.

At their family home, she tells Pat to say sorry to his father, possibly for disrespecting him. Pat refuses, saying that Ming should be the one to apologize first. After several minutes of fighting, they are interrupted by Dissaya storming into their house from next door, who starts arguing with Ming as well, accusing him of "brainwashing her son." Through the blowout, Pat's mom stays beside Ming. After Dissaya leaves, Pat confronts Ming, who does not reply and leaves. His mom attempts to talk to them both, telling Pat, "Back then, your grandfather put so much pressure on him. And he was very young. We all have something we want to go back and fix." Pat replies with frustration, saying, "But he can't fix his past, and I must be the one who takes it, right?" before leaving. She distinctly looks desperately caught between her son and husband.

Pat comes back home after Episode 11 and tells his parents that he and Pran broke up, and apologizes to them. She comforts him; unbeknownst to her, Pat is smiling.

Shortly after Pa's graduation, Pa and Ink are in their living room with Ming, and she brings them a bowl of fruit. When Pa notices that Pran is home next door, her mom says, "Oh, he's back?" and exchanges a look with her husband. Pat comes home just seconds later. His mom is unsurprised and asks if he's eaten anything yet, to which he replies he hasn't but wants a hug first, before hugging her. Ming says that Pat won't get any hugs from him and asks Pat what he wants. Pat says he doesn't want anything, but that his friend recently came back from abroad and bought a gift for Ming. When Ming does not reply, Pat exchanges looks with his mom, Ink, and Pa, before prompting his mom, who decides to open up the package, revealing imported liquor. Knowing Ming is being stubborn, she says, "If nobody wants it, it's mine then." When Pat and Ink ask to share, she agrees; when Pa also chimes in, she tells her daughter to "take it slow," which Ink laughs at. Pat and his mom also notice imported snacks in the gift bag.

During dinner, Pat tries to offer food to nearly everyone at the table, and she tells him to stop trying to give other people food and eat what's on his plate. After Pat tells them all that LogTech approved of the university bus stop projects, she says that they have to celebrate, and Pa grabs the imported liquor gifted by Pran earlier. Pat pours a cup and offers some to his father, who is silent, before taking a sip. Pat leaves to take a phone call from a customer. Pa offers to do the dishes and Ink says she'll help; Ming's wife says to him, "It's like we have two daughters." After nearly everyone else has left the table, Ming takes a sip of the glass of liquor Pat had poured earlier. His wife comes back to get more dishes and notices, but does not say anything and smiles to herself after Ming leaves.

That evening, she and Ming hear a noise on their rooftop, and likely (and correctly) guess that it has something to do with Pat sneaking over to Pran's room. She tells Ming, "Just leave it to their generation," and he pauses but concedes. She tells him, "Let it go. You've started to get grey hair all over now."

Trivia

  • At the dinner table, Ming sits at the head while she sits on his right.
